Question 27: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Examine the following statements :

  1. 1.Rama scored more than Rani.
  2. 2.Rani scored less than Ratna.
  3. 3.Ratna scored more than Rama.
  4. 4.Padma scored more than Rama but less than Ratna.

Who scored the highest ?

aRama
bPadma
cRani
dRatna

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Turn the statements into a ranking. Rama beat Rani; Ratna beat Rani; Ratna beat Rama; Padma beat Rama but scored less than Ratna. So Ratna > Padma > Rama > Rani. Nobody is above Ratna, so Ratna scored the highest. Remember: find the person who is never on the lower side of any comparison.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Ratna and Padma both scored more than Rama.
  • (b) Wrong. Padma scored less than Ratna.
  • (c) Wrong. Rani scored less than Rama and Ratna.
  • (d) Right. Ratna beat Rani, Rama and Padma, and nobody beat Ratna.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
