Question 29: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following pairs : Large Bank Country of origin
- 1.ABN Amro Bank : USA
- 2.Barclays Bank : UK
- 3.Kookmin Bank : Japan
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched ?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Only pair 2 is correct. Barclays is a British bank headquartered in London. ABN Amro is a Dutch bank (Netherlands), not American. Kookmin Bank is one of the largest banks of South Korea, not Japan. Remember that banking names often point to the home country: Barclays UK, ABN Amro Netherlands, Kookmin Korea.
- 1. ABN Amro is a Dutch bank, not American.
- 2. Barclays is a British bank.
- 3. Kookmin Bank is South Korean, not Japanese.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: ABN Amro is a Dutch bank, not American.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (d) goes: it includes 3.
What you needed to know: Kookmin Bank is South Korean, not Japanese.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: ABN Amro is Dutch, not American.
- (b) Right: only Barclays-UK is correct.
- (c) Wrong: ABN Amro is not American.
- (d) Wrong: Kookmin Bank is South Korean, not Japanese.
