Question 28: Polity and Governance
Under the administration of which one of the following is the Department of Atomic Energy ?
aPrime Minister's Office
bCabinet Secretariat
cMinistry of Power
dMinistry of Science and Technology
AnswerThe answer is (a).
The Department of Atomic Energy functions under the direct charge of the Prime Minister, who has traditionally held it, with the Atomic Energy Commission as its policy body. The Department of Space is likewise under the Prime Minister. It does not sit under the Ministry of Power, the Cabinet Secretariat or the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the DAE is under the Prime Minister's charge (the PMO).
- (b) The Cabinet Secretariat serves the Cabinet and does not administer the DAE.
- (c) Nuclear power plants supply electricity, but the DAE is not under the Ministry of Power.
- (d) The Department of Science and Technology is a separate department; the DAE is not under it.
