Question 63: Geography
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Ajman is one of the seven Emirates of the UAE.
- 2.Ras al-Khaimah was the last Sheikhdom to join the UAE.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Both statements are correct. The UAE is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah and Ras al-Khaimah. The federation was formed on 2 December 1971 by six emirates, and Ras al-Khaimah joined in February 1972, the last to do so. Abu Dhabi is the capital.
- 1. Ajman is one of the seven emirates.
- 2. Ras al-Khaimah joined in 1972, after the six founders.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Ajman is one of the seven emirates.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Ras al-Khaimah joined in 1972, after the six founders.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Ajman is one of the seven emirates, and Ras al-Khaimah joined last.
- (d) Both statements are true, so neither being correct is wrong.
