Question 62: International Relations and Current Affairs

India is a member of which of the following?

  1. 1.Asian Development Bank
  2. 2.Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
  3. 3.Colombo Plan
  4. 4.Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a1 and 3 only
b2 and 4 only
c1, 2 and 3 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (a).

India is a member of the Asian Development Bank, which it joined at its founding in 1966, and of the Colombo Plan, which dates from 1950. It is not a member of APEC, which has not admitted India, and it is not a member of the OECD, a grouping of mostly high-income economies, though India works with it as a key partner. So only 1 and 3 hold.

  • 1. India is a member of the Asian Development Bank.
  • 2. India is not a member of APEC.
  • 3. India is a member of the Colombo Plan.
  • 4. India is not a member of the OECD.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: India is not a member of APEC.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3 or 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) India is a member of the ADB and the Colombo Plan.
  • (b) India belongs to neither APEC nor the OECD.
  • (c) Includes APEC, which India has not joined.
  • (d) Includes APEC and the OECD, neither of which India has joined.
