Question 45: History and Culture
Which one of the following Muslim rulers was hailed as the ‘Jagadguru’ by his Muslim subjects because of his belief in secularism?
aHusain Shah
bZain-ul-Abidin
cIbrahim Adil Shah
dMahmud II
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Bijapur (1580-1627) was hailed as Jagadguru for his tolerance towards Hindus and his patronage of music. He composed songs in Dakhni, wrote the Kitab-i-Nauras, and honoured Hindu deities and Sarasvati in his verse. His tomb, the Ibrahim Rauza, is a notable monument at Bijapur.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Husain Shah is not the ruler known by this title.
- (b) Zain-ul-Abidin of Kashmir is known as Budshah, the great king, not Jagadguru.
- (c) Right: Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Bijapur was called Jagadguru.
- (d) Mahmud II is not the ruler known by this title.
