Question 44: Geography

Consider the following provinces of former Yugoslavia: I. Bosnia II. Croatia III. Slovenia IV. Yugoslavia The correct sequence of these provinces from the east to the west is

aIV, I, III, II
bIV, I, II, III
cI, IV, III, II
dI, IV, II, III

AnswerThe answer is (b).

From east to west: the rump Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) lies furthest east, then Bosnia, then Croatia, which curves round Bosnia along the Adriatic coast, and Slovenia is the westernmost, bordering Austria and Italy. So the order is IV, I, II, III. A map of the former Yugoslavia is the best way to fix this.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Puts Slovenia east of Croatia, which is wrong: Slovenia is further west.
  • (b) Right: Yugoslavia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, from east to west.
  • (c) Puts Bosnia east of Yugoslavia and Slovenia east of Croatia, both wrong.
  • (d) Puts Bosnia east of Yugoslavia, which is wrong.
