Question 11: History and Culture

Which one of the following is not correct about the Cabinet Mission Plan?

aProvincial grouping
bInterim Cabinet of Indians
cAcceptance of Pakistan
dConstitution framing right

AnswerThe answer is (c).

The Cabinet Mission (1946) rejected the demand for a separate, sovereign Pakistan. Its plan proposed a Union of India with provinces placed in groups (A, B and C), a Constituent Assembly with the right to frame the constitution, and an interim government of Indians. Acceptance of Pakistan was never part of it. Remember: grouping, interim government and constitution-making yes; Pakistan no.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Provinces were to be grouped in sections A, B and C, so this is part of the plan.
  • (b) An interim government of Indians was proposed in the plan.
  • (c) Right: the Mission rejected a separate sovereign Pakistan.
  • (d) A Constituent Assembly with the right to frame the constitution was central to the plan.
