Question 84: International Relations and Current Affairs

The signatories to the treaty banning chemical weapons include

aUSA, Russia, India, Iran and Israel
bIraq, Libya, India, Russia and China
cBrazil, Angola, North Korea, Pakistan and USA
dSyria, Sri Lanka, Japan, Singapore and France

AnswerThe answer is (a).

The Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons, was opened for signature in Paris in January 1993. The United States, Russia, India, Iran and Israel were among its early signatories. The other options each include a state that had not signed then, such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, Angola or North Korea. Remember: CWC opened for signature in January 1993.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: all five were among the signatories of 1993.
  • (b) Iraq and Libya had not signed then.
  • (c) Angola and North Korea had not signed then.
  • (d) Syria had not signed then.

Worth knowing: Dated: Iraq, Libya and Syria have since joined the convention, and China, named in (b), is a party, so option (b) is also true today.
