Opening · a definition
Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles - which have dual use applications, and even within military domain - variety of uses.
Recently, use of a drone to drop an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) during an attack in J&K (Poonch) shows the challenges due to drones.
Anonymity contributing to border challenges (drone):
Body · points
- Large border - difficult to track origin of drone.
- Variety of drone operating systems ↓ No standardisation ↓ difficult to trace even if drone is found.
- Increasingly higher operational capability
- Easy availability → hard to trace who sold it.
- Anonymity and small size also leads to surveillance challenges ↓ anonymous surveillance.
Ease of operation contributing to border challenges;
[Unmanned] - remotely operatable / autonomous
difficult to shoot down (due to small size)
Small [Radar Cross Section (RCS)] ↓ difficult to detect ↓ easy to operate.
Cost asymmetry / asymmetric warfare ↓ very cheap to make a drone, very expensive to deploy anti-drone technology
Potential to target victims with accuracy (Eg): USA Predator drones used to target terrorists in Afghanistan, Iran
Suggestions to tackle drone problem in border areas;
[Defensive system] ↓ Both "hard kill" + "soft kill" → [Israeli Iron Dome like system.] → electronic jamming → Radio frequency identification → laser based attack
[Aerial domain awareness] - using Radar.
