In the news since 4 August 2026

Why in news
On 4 August 2026, the Ministry of MSME highlighted the ZED Certification scheme's reach and the 100% certification subsidy for women-owned MSMEs, with data as of 7 July 2026.
What it is
MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification is a Ministry of MSME scheme built on the idea of Zero Defect, Zero Effect. It pushes MSMEs to make quality products with minimal environmental harm. It gives a structured path of assessment, improvement, incentives and technology upgradation.
Certification levels
The framework has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each a higher standard of quality and sustainability.
Financial assistance
Eligible MSMEs get up to 75% of testing/certification cost (maximum ₹50,000), up to ₹2 lakh for handholding and consultancy, and up to ₹3 lakh for Zero Effect solutions and cleaner technologies.
Reach
As of 7 July 2026, about 9.49 lakh MSMEs had registered, with over 6.67 lakh Bronze, 6,700 Silver and 4,800 Gold certifications.

Don’t confuse with ZED Certification vs ZED scheme: ZED is not only a certificate. It also covers handholding, incentives and technology upgradation.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Scheme on the syllabus; mostly success stories, few testable facts.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
