- Why in news
- On 17 June 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a new Chairperson and three part-time Members for the National Statistical Commission. Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay is the new Chairperson.
- What it is
- The National Statistical Commission (NSC) is the nodal body for India's core statistical activities. It sets statistical priorities and standards, enforces them and works for coordination across the statistical system. MoSPI's Secretary acts as its Secretary.
- Year set up
- The NSC was set up in 2005 as the nodal body for core statistical activities.
- Composition
- It has a part-time Chairperson, four part-time Members and the CEO of NITI Aayog as an ex-officio Member.
- Secretary
- The Secretary of MoSPI is also the Secretary to the NSC.
- Appointing authority
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the new Chairperson and Members.
- Statistical audit
- The NSC undertakes statistical audit of statistical activities to ensure quality and integrity of statistical products.
Don’t confuse with NSC vs MoSPI: MoSPI is the ministry that collects and publishes data through NSO. The NSC is the nodal body that sets standards and audits the statistical system.
Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
Why it matters
- Trusted official data is needed for policy, and the NSC works to improve public trust in official statistics.
Problems
- Part-time members and an advisory-type role may limit how strongly standards are enforced.
Way forward
- Give the NSC stronger statutory backing and independence, with regular statistical audits made public.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting body with composition facts; the appointments themselves are not testable. Statutory bodies are only 7 Prelims questions.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
