- Why in news
- On 13 October 2026, a nationwide social media campaign featuring JOSH Teams was held in 11 states and 55 districts on a pilot basis. PIB issued a backgrounder on India's TB elimination progress the same day.
- What it is
- JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams are youth-led community groups under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which is part of the National TB Elimination Programme. Each team has MY Bharat volunteers, National Cadet Corps cadets and a designated Class-I officer. They spread awareness on screening, treatment adherence and stigma, in line with the Jan Andolan approach.
- Team composition
- Each JOSH team has MY Bharat volunteers, NCC cadets and a Class-I officer.
- Pilot scope
- The pilot social media campaign covered 11 states and 55 districts and was held on 13 October 2026.
- Parent campaign
- The PM TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan was launched on 9 September 2022 as an additional component of the NTEP, to build a Jan Andolan.
- Nikshay Poshan Yojana
- Launched in 2018, it gives Rs 1,000 per month to each notified TB patient through direct benefit transfer.
- BPaLM regimen
- BPaLM (Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid, Moxifloxacin) is a 6-month regimen for drug-resistant TB.

Don’t confuse with Ni-kshay Mitra vs Nikshay Poshan Yojana: Ni-kshay Mitra is a community supporter who gives food baskets and support. Nikshay Poshan Yojana is a government cash transfer of Rs 1,000 a month to notified patients.
Don’t confuse with NSP 2020-25 vs NTEP: The National Strategic Plan is the 2020-25 roadmap with four pillars. NTEP is the programme that carries it out.
Don’t confuse with JOSH Teams vs Ni-kshay Mitra: JOSH Teams are organised youth and officer squads for community outreach. Ni-kshay Mitra is a separate initiative where donors support TB patients with nutrition and other help.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Youth and community mobilisation helps find asymptomatic cases and reduces stigma, which keeps patients from seeking care.
- It supports India's aim to end TB before the global 2030 target through a Jan Andolan.
- Brings youth and administrative networks into TB outreach beyond health facilities.
- Shows convergence across Health, Youth and Defence ministries and Jan Bhagidari in TB elimination.
Problems
- The campaign is a social media pilot in only 55 districts, so reach and measurable impact are uncertain.
- Stigma, delayed care-seeking and treatment dropouts among vulnerable groups persist.
- Volunteer and cadet participation may be uneven and hard to sustain after the launch.
- Reaching stigma and treatment-completion goals needs trained messengers and links with health workers.
Way forward
- Scale up proven pilot models and track outcomes such as screening, notification and treatment completion.
- Link youth teams with Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Ni-kshay Mitras and local bodies for sustained follow-up.
- Train team members and link them with local health workers and Panchayats.
- Track outcomes such as notification and treatment completion in the 55 districts before scaling up.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: TB Mukt Bharat is a lasting topic already on file; the backgrounder adds data but no new decision.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
