- Why in news
- On 5 June 2026, PIB marked four years of the Jan Samarth Portal, launched on 6 June 2022, and gave its scale: about 54.10 lakh applications processed by 1 June 2026.
- What it is
- Jan Samarth is a digital single-window portal run under the Ministry of Finance. It links applicants for government credit-linked schemes directly with lenders. It checks eligibility, gives in-principle sanction and sends the application to a bank branch.
- Launch
- The portal was launched on 6 June 2022 as a platform for credit-linked government schemes.
- Schemes covered
- It is a unified gateway for applications to 16 credit-linked Central Government schemes.
- Languages
- It is available in 8 languages, to help rural and underprivileged users.
- Lenders
- 269 Member Lending Institutions are onboarded, including banks, NBFCs, RRBs and cooperative banks.
- Data integration
- It runs real-time checks against government databases such as UIDAI, UDYAM, AgriStack and GST.
- Lenders onboarded
- About 254 lenders onboarded as on 20 March 2026, including 12 PSBs, 20 private banks, 28 RRBs, 173 DCCBs, 15 NBFCs and 6 SFBs.
- Progress
- 41.14 lakh applications worth ₹1,06,306 crore processed; banks gave digital approval to 35.07 lakh beneficiaries worth ₹84,365.55 crore.
- How it works
- The portal checks eligibility, gives in-principle sanction and forwards the application to the chosen bank branch.
- Data links
- Real-time checks with CBDT, GST, UDYAM, NeSL, UIDAI, CIBIL, AgriStack and others speed up processing.
Don’t confuse with Jan Samarth vs Jan Dhan: Jan Samarth is a credit-application portal for linked schemes. Jan Dhan Yojana is about opening bank accounts.
Don’t confuse with Jan Samarth vs UDGAM/other portals: Jan Samarth links applicants to lenders for scheme loans. It is not a regulator or a credit bureau, though it uses CIBIL data.
Don’t confuse with Jan Samarth vs Udyamimitra: Both are digital loan portals. Jan Samarth covers 15 Central credit-linked schemes across sectors, not only MSME loans.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Cuts the need to visit many portals and bank branches, helping financial inclusion.
- Links lenders directly with beneficiaries, which improves transparency and speed of credit delivery.
- A single window cuts multiple bank visits and paperwork, helping financial inclusion and ease of doing business.
- Real-time data checks and a built-in rule engine speed up approvals and reduce discretion.
Problems
- Rural users may lack digital literacy and connectivity.
- Approval still depends on bank branch decisions, so sanctioned amounts may differ from applications.
- Digital divide and low digital literacy can exclude rural and poor applicants.
- Final sanction still rests with banks, so rejections and delays may continue.
Way forward
- Expand assisted mode through business correspondents and add more regional languages.
- Track approvals to disbursement and cut rejection and delay.
- Expand assisted mode through business correspondents and more regional languages.
- Onboard more State and Central schemes and track approval-to-disbursal outcomes.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Single-window credit-linked scheme portal is a lasting topic. Little for a statement beyond the 2022 launch date, so no practice question.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
