- Why in news
- On 20 August 2026, the Ministry of Labour & Employment said ESIC medical colleges have produced 4,961 doctors, 1,682 of them children of workers covered under the ESI Scheme.
- What it is
- The Employees' State Insurance Scheme gives medical care and cash benefits to workers in covered establishments and their families. It is run by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour & Employment. ESIC also runs hospitals and medical colleges, and reserves seats for children of insured persons.
- Reach of the scheme
- The ESI Scheme is implemented in 728 of 787 districts.
- Doctors produced
- ESIC medical colleges have produced 4,961 doctors, of whom 1,682 are wards of insured persons.
- Medical education capacity
- There are 17 ESIC medical colleges, with 1,550 MBBS seats.
- Legal basis
- ESIC is a statutory body set up under the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948. The Act is a key social security law for workers.
Don’t confuse with ESIC vs ESI Scheme: ESIC is the statutory body that runs the ESI Scheme. The scheme is the insurance benefit itself.
Don’t confuse with ESIC vs EPFO: ESIC gives health and cash benefits. EPFO handles provident fund, pension and insurance for employees.

Why it matters
- Gives insured workers and their families health care and cash benefits, extending social security to the organised workforce.
- Adds medical seats and doctors, and gives workers' children access to medical education.
Problems
- Coverage is still limited to workers in covered establishments, leaving many informal workers out.
- Quality of care and capacity vary across hospitals and dispensaries.
Way forward
- Extend coverage to more districts and informal and gig workers.
- Strengthen hospital and staffing standards in ESIC facilities.
