- Why in news
- On 20 June 2026, the Department of Pension & Pensioners' Welfare marked 12 years of pension reforms through digitalization, highlighting the Bhavishya platform's reach and results.
- Who runs it
- It is run by DoPPW under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
- Form 6-A
- A single simplified pension application form, notified on 16 July 2024, amended Rules 53, 57, 58, 59 and 60 of the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021. It is integrated with Bhavishya with a single e-Sign.
- Integrations
- Bhavishya is linked with CGHS for medical cover from the first day of retirement, and with 11 banks covering about 92 percent of pensioners.
- Recognition
- It ranked 3rd in the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment (NeSDA) 2021.
Don’t confuse with PPO vs Digital Life Certificate: A Pension Payment Order authorises the pension. A Digital Life Certificate is the yearly proof that the pensioner is alive.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Cuts delay and clerical errors in pension sanction, improving ease of living for retirees.
- Single e-signed form and real-time tracking add transparency and accountability.
Problems
- Only 73 percent of superannuation PPOs are on time, so delays remain.
- Covers central civil employees only; other pensioners and less digitally literate retirees may face access gaps.
Way forward
- Raise on-time PPO rates through monitoring of lagging offices and DDOs.
- Widen bank integration and offer assisted digital help for pensioners.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Digital pension system, mandatory for central ministries since 2017. Governance topic, but a question is unlikely; Prelims and Mains rarely target such portals.
