Radiocarbon Dating of Munger Banyan

GS3 Science and TechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 3 July 2026, the Ministry of Science & Technology announced that a banyan tree in Munger, Bihar, is about 700 years old by radiocarbon dating. It is called the oldest accurately dated banyan.
What it is
The Munger Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is a heritage tree on the ITC campus in Munger, Bihar. Scientists of the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, dated it with a new method for tropical trees. Earlier age estimates for such trees rested on folklore and records.
Method used
The team used high-precision radiocarbon dating by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) on extracted alpha-cellulose. Results were calibrated against IntCal20 and OxCal software.
Why not tree rings
Most tropical broadleaf trees lack distinct annual growth rings. This limits conventional dendrochronology and makes radiocarbon dating necessary.
Sampling site
Samples came from wood near the pith of a secondary trunk and an ancient primary branch. The pith holds the earliest wood formed in the juvenile stage of secondary growth.
Institute
Dr. Trina Bose of the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, led the work. The institute is an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology.
Radiocarbon basis
Radiocarbon dating measures the decay of carbon-14 in organic material. It suits material up to roughly 50,000 years old.

Don’t confuse with Dendrochronology vs radiocarbon dating: Dendrochronology counts annual growth rings, which most tropical broadleaf trees lack. Radiocarbon dating measures carbon-14 decay in wood and works without rings.

Don’t confuse with Carbon dating vs other isotope dating: Radiocarbon dating suits organic material of recent age, up to about 50,000 years. Uranium-series and potassium-argon methods are used for much older rocks and minerals.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Concept of radiocarbon dating is syllabus-relevant, but a news-linked question on this finding is unlikely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Defence and security

Defence Acquisition Council and Acceptance of Necessity

GS3 SecurityPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On July 3, 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave Acceptance of Necessity for acquisition proposals worth about Rs 52,000 crore for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
What it is
The Defence Acquisition Council is the Defence Ministry's highest body for approving capital acquisitions for the armed forces, headed by the Defence Minister. Acceptance of Necessity is its first, in-principle approval, given before the procurement process of tendering, trials and contracts begins.
Who chairs the DAC
The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, chaired the meeting.
What AoN means
AoN is an in-principle administrative approval, the first step in capital acquisition. It is not a contract or a purchase order.
Army items
The Army proposals include the anti-UAV electronic warfare system AKASH TARANG, MPATGM, MRSAM, V-SHORADS, an Active Protection System for tanks and jet-based kamikaze drones.
Navy items
The Navy proposals cover the Multi Influence Ground Mine, the Naval Shipborne Unmanned Aerial System and a Land Based Testing Facility for Electric Propulsion Systems.
Air Force item
The Air Force proposal is for a Fixed-Wing High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (FW-HAPS) for persistent surveillance, telecommunication and remote sensing.
DAC origin
The DAC was set up in 2001 after the Group of Ministers' review following the Kargil conflict.

Don’t confuse with AoN vs contract: AoN only allows the procurement process to begin. The contract is signed much later, after trials and negotiation, and is cleared by the competent financial authority.

Don’t confuse with MRSAM vs V-SHORADS: MRSAM gives medium-range air defence against stand-off aerial threats. V-SHORADS is a very short range system, a shorter-range layer of defence.

Defence: Prelims tests exercises (with whom), equipment (who makes it) and firsts.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Defence hardware rarely reaches Mains; DAC is a recurring body, so card only.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR)

GS3 InfrastructurePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 3 July 2026, PIB described how the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is becoming a standard template for seven future high-speed rail corridors in India.
What it is
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) is India's first bullet train corridor. It uses Japanese Shinkansen technology and is built by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited. It is meant to cut travel time between the two cities to under two hours.
Technology
The project uses Japanese Shinkansen technology and operational practices.
Track system
J-Slab ballastless track is being introduced in India for the first time.
Opening plan
The first service is expected in August 2027, with the Surat to Vapi section opening first.

Don’t confuse with MAHSR vs Vande Bharat: MAHSR bullet trains have a design speed of up to 350 kmph. Vande Bharat trains have a design speed of 180 kmph.

Don’t confuse with Design speed vs operational speed: Design speed (350 kmph) is what the system is built for. Operational speed (320 kmph) is the speed at which trains will run in service.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting infrastructure topic; few testable facts, so no question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

In the news

National One Health Mission

GS3 Health and diseaseGS2 HealthPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 3 July 2026, DAHD wrapped up Pashujanya Yudh Abhyas, the third national mock drill under the National One Health Mission, held at Khari village, Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh) from 29 June.
What it is
The National One Health Mission is a government effort to coordinate animal health, human health, wildlife and environment agencies on zoonotic diseases. One Health treats the health of people, animals and ecosystems as linked. Mock drills such as Pashujanya Yudh Abhyas test how these agencies work together from first alert to containment.
Drill
Pashujanya Yudh Abhyas is the third national-level mock drill under the National One Health Mission.
Place and dates
It was held at Khari village, Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh, over five days from 29 June to 3 July 2026.
Scenario
The scenario was an Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak in animals with potential spillover to humans and wildlife.
Response team
Experts from animal health, human health and wildlife worked under the National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT).
BSL-3 labs
Laboratories of the National BSL-3 Network took part, namely ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal and AIIMS Bhopal.

Don’t confuse with One Health approach vs National One Health Mission: One Health is the concept linking human, animal and environmental health. The Mission is the government programme that puts it into practice.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting topic with a mock drill; few distinct facts to build a question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
