Piprahwa Relics

GS1 Art and CulturePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 3 January 2026, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the international exposition of the Piprahwa relics, "The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One", at Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, New Delhi. The relics were repatriated after about 125 years.
What it is
The Piprahwa relics are Buddhist relic deposits and gems found at the Piprahwa stupa site in 1898. The site is linked to ancient Kapilavastu, associated with the Buddha's early life and the Shakya clan. They are among the earliest relic deposits directly connected to the Buddha.
Discovery
The relics were discovered in 1898. The site is Piprahwa, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, near the Nepal border.
Link to Kapilavastu
Archaeological evidence associates Piprahwa with ancient Kapilavastu, where the Buddha spent his early life before renunciation.
Exposition venue
The exposition is held at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, New Delhi, on the site of Qila Rai Pithora, a medieval walled city.
First joint display
The exposition brings together the repatriated relics with Piprahwa relics held by the National Museum, New Delhi, and the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Repatriation route
The PM said India refused to allow a public auction of the relics. He thanked the Godrej Group for its cooperation in bringing them back, a public-private partnership.
Pali
Pali, the language of the Buddha's teachings, has been given classical language status.
Repatriation
The Peppé family's gem relics were brought back in July 2025 through a public-private partnership, which halted a Sotheby's Hong Kong auction.
Dispersal of relics
After discovery, one part went to the King of Siam, one to England and one stayed at the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Exposition
The exposition is titled 'The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One' and has over 80 objects from the 6th century BCE to the present.
Repatriation count
The release says 642 antiquities have been repatriated to India.
Location
Piprahwa lies in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, near the Nepal border.

Don’t confuse with Piprahwa vs Lumbini: Piprahwa is an Indian site identified with Kapilavastu. Lumbini, in Nepal, is the Buddha's birthplace, with the Maya Devi temple.

Don’t confuse with Sanchi stupa vs Piprahwa: The exposition's central model is inspired by the Sanchi stupa. It is only an interpretive model, not the source of the relics.

Art and culture in the news: Prelims tests UNESCO listings, GI tags and where a site is.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting culture topic on Buddhist heritage and repatriation. Culture gets 8 Prelims questions since 2013 and almost never reaches Mains, so no practice question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

In the news

ECINet App

GS2 Elections and GovernancePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 3 January 2026, the Election Commission of India invited citizens to suggest improvements to the ECINet App through its 'Submit a Suggestion' tab by 10 January 2026. The app is to be officially launched this month.
What it is
ECINet is a single app of the Election Commission of India that brings many separate election apps and websites into one interface for citizens. It covers voter services, turnout trends and candidate information. It aims to speed up election data and make it easier to use.
Merged apps
ECINet merges 40 earlier election applications and websites, including Voter Helpline App, cVIGIL, Saksham, Polling Trends and Know Your Candidate.
Index Cards
The app allows Index Cards to be published within 72 hours of the close of polls, which earlier took weeks or months.
Trial
The app was tried out in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 and the bye-elections.
Commission
The Commission is led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar with Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi.
Constitutional basis
The Election Commission is a constitutional body under Article 324, which vests superintendence, direction and control of elections in it.

Don’t confuse with cVIGIL vs Voter Helpline App: cVIGIL is for reporting model code of conduct violations; Voter Helpline App gives voter services such as roll search. Both are now merged into ECINet.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Single app replacing about 40 election apps; lasting governance topic but few testable facts, so no practice question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
