- Why in news
- On 3 January 2026, the Election Commission of India invited citizens to suggest improvements to the ECINet App through its 'Submit a Suggestion' tab by 10 January 2026. The app is to be officially launched this month.
- What it is
- ECINet is a single app of the Election Commission of India that brings many separate election apps and websites into one interface for citizens. It covers voter services, turnout trends and candidate information. It aims to speed up election data and make it easier to use.
- Merged apps
- ECINet merges 40 earlier election applications and websites, including Voter Helpline App, cVIGIL, Saksham, Polling Trends and Know Your Candidate.
- Index Cards
- The app allows Index Cards to be published within 72 hours of the close of polls, which earlier took weeks or months.
- Trial
- The app was tried out in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 and the bye-elections.
- Commission
- The Commission is led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar with Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi.
- Constitutional basis
- The Election Commission is a constitutional body under Article 324, which vests superintendence, direction and control of elections in it.
Don’t confuse with cVIGIL vs Voter Helpline App: cVIGIL is for reporting model code of conduct violations; Voter Helpline App gives voter services such as roll search. Both are now merged into ECINet.
Why it matters
- Merging 40 apps into one makes election services easier for citizens to find and use.
- Faster turnout data and Index Cards improve transparency in elections.
Problems
- Digital divide and app dependence may leave some voters, especially in rural areas, behind.
- A single platform holding large voter data raises data security and privacy concerns.
Way forward
- Keep feedback loops with field officials and citizens, and test security before scale-up.
- Provide offline and assisted access so all voters can use the services.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Single app replacing about 40 election apps; lasting governance topic but few testable facts, so no practice question.
