Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath (UNESCO World Heritage)

GS1 Art and CulturePrelims and Mains

Why in news
The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 25 July 2026 at the 48th World Heritage Committee session in Busan; PIB explained it on 26 August 2026.
What it is
Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, is where the Buddha gave his first sermon, the Dharmachakra Pravartana, to his first five disciples. It is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites linked to his life. Its monuments include the Dhamek Stupa, the Dharmarajika Stupa, the Mulagandhakuti Vihara and the Ashokan Pillar.
Criteria
The nomination was under cultural criteria (iii) and (vi). Criterion (iii) covers its role as a pilgrimage destination. Criterion (vi) covers its direct association with events in the Buddha's life.
Components
The inscribed property has two components: the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath.
Process
Sarnath was put on India's Tentative List in 1998. ICOMOS, an advisory body, evaluated the nomination. The Tentative List is the mandatory first step for any nomination.
India's rank
India has 37 cultural, 7 natural and 1 mixed property. It ranks sixth globally and second in the Asia Pacific region.
Convention
The World Heritage Convention was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

Don’t confuse with ICOMOS vs IUCN: ICOMOS advises on cultural and mixed properties. IUCN advises on natural properties.

Don’t confuse with Tentative List vs World Heritage List: The Tentative List is a country's shortlist of possible nominations. The World Heritage List holds properties the Committee has inscribed.

Art and culture in the news: Prelims tests UNESCO listings, GI tags and where a site is.

Sugar Industry and Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP)

GS3 AgriculturePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 26 August 2026 the PIB explained India's sugar sector and the recent price rise. Retail sugar rose about 15.6% in a month, and the government set stock limits and allowed duty-free raw sugar imports.
What it is
The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) is the minimum price mills must pay farmers for sugarcane. The Centre fixes it each sugar season (October-September) and links it to a basic recovery rate. Sugar is an essential commodity, so the Centre can regulate its stocks and prices.
Top producers
Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the top sugarcane-producing states.
Stock limit
Sugar dealers face a 400-tonne stock limit from 1 August to 30 November 2026.
Duty-free import
The government permitted duty-free import of 10 lakh MT of raw sugar to raise domestic supply.
Ethanol diversion
The share of sugar diverted to ethanol fell from about 12% in 2022-23 to about 9% in 2025-26.
Legal basis of FRP
FRP is fixed under the Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, on the advice of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

Don’t confuse with FRP vs State Advised Price (SAP): FRP is the national minimum price fixed by the Centre. SAP is set by some states, such as Uttar Pradesh, and is often higher than FRP.

Don’t confuse with FRP vs MSP: MSP is a procurement-support price for notified crops, while FRP is a legally binding minimum price that mills pay for sugarcane.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting topic on pricing and the sugar sector. FRP is a known topic, but this explainer has few new facts for a fresh question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
