Question 147: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements :
- 1.The Union Government fixes the Statutory Minimum Price of sugarcane for each sugar season.
- 2.Sugar and sugarcane are essential commodities under the Essential Commodities Act.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Union Government fixed a Statutory Minimum Price for sugarcane each sugar season, the least price mills must pay growers, under the Sugarcane (Control) Order; States could add a higher advised price. Sugar and sugarcane are essential commodities under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, which lets the government regulate their production, supply and distribution; the Sugarcane (Control) Order itself is issued under that Act. Both statements are correct.
- 1. The Union fixes the statutory minimum price for each sugar season.
- 2. Sugar and sugarcane are covered by the Essential Commodities Act.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The Union fixes the statutory minimum price for each sugar season.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Sugar and sugarcane are covered by the Essential Commodities Act.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Right: both statements are correct.
- (d) Both are correct, so 'neither' is wrong.
Worth knowing: The Statutory Minimum Price was renamed the Fair and Remunerative Price from the 2009-10 season, so statement 1 would now refer to FRP.
