Question 13: Economy and Social Development
The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane is approved by the
aCabinet Committee on Economic Affairs
bCommission for Agricultural Costs and Prices
cDirectorate of Marketing and Inspection, Ministry of Agriculture
dAgricultural Produce Market Committee
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
The Fair and Remunerative Price of sugarcane, the minimum price mills must pay cane growers, is approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices only recommends it, after examining costs and the market. FRP replaced the earlier statutory minimum price from the 2009-10 season. Remember: CACP recommends, CCEA approves.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves the FRP.
- (b) CACP recommends the price but does not approve it.
- (c) The Directorate of Marketing and Inspection deals with grading, standardisation and market intelligence, not cane pricing.
- (d) APMCs run agricultural market yards; they do not set the FRP of cane.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
