Indian caste system is entrenched in religion because various religious scriptures legitimize the Varna hierarchy which takes up practical forms in form of caste and sub-caste. As can be guessed, secularization would lead to weakening of caste hold as the religious scriptures may no longer hold much impact.

Today, 'pollution' and 'purity' ideas are seldom followed stringently in urban areas where people use common modes of transport, eat from similar restaurants, work at similar jobs. However, the hold of caste

related pollution and purity is still strong in rural areas.

However, on the flip side, caste persists in secular spheres like politics where people continue voting for their caste. In fact, there is use of a religious identity like caste to attain secular benefits like education and jobs through demands for reservations.

At the same time, with significant in-roads of religion into politics, even secularization is doubted.
