EMERGENCE OF SOCIOLOGY IN EUROPE
Based on the ideological support of Renaissance and Enlightenment period the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution brought tremendous changes in European society.
As society changed from feudal society to industrial one, French sociologists like Saint-Simon, August Comte, Emile Durkheim attempted to explain social changes and in the process established the discipline of Sociology in the 19th century.
EXPANSION IN USA
Soon after in the early 20th century the discipline flourished in USA with the founding of the Chicago School.
Sociologists of the Chicago school attempted to make the discipline an applied science as they tried to study problems of urbanisation, crime, race relations, etc.
Sociologists like Talcott Parsons through his systems approach, Robert Merton developed the idea of functionalism further and G.H Mead established the perspective of symbolic interactionism — and thus enriched the field of Sociology.
