An informal organisation can be characterised by lack of legal laws & rules, personalised relationship, lack of social security etc. SHGs are organisations where members come together for their collective benefit and pooling their common resources.

Sociological Perspective

  • SHG can employ women and it leads to women empowerment
  • It gives voice to marginalised and vulnerables. for eg. small and marginal farmers can form SHG
  • SHG improves social capital because of interaction among members.
  • It improves the fraternity of individuals.
  • SHGs contribute to economy of a country.
  • However, in SHGs, some dominant individuals can capture power and exploit others. Daniel Thorner showed the presence of politics in cooperatives of Gujarat.

Hence SHG can play major role in upliftment of marginalised people. It can also reduce the inequalities in the society.
