Pattern variables are the general attitude of society which help in resolving dilemma of actor in performing roles.

According to Parsons, when actor perform roles (ie the basic unit of social system), he/she is face dilemma. These dilemmas are related to dichotomous nature of need disposition and values prevailing in the society.

Role in understanding social system

According to Parsons, social institutions are grouped into two opposite categories of orientation.

The Pattern variables helps in understanding the nature of social system by categorising the types of society into traditional or modern. These types of orientation guides the social actions of the actors for ex- in traditional society, the social relationships are guided by ascriptive nature of identity while achievement decides this in modern society.

Ferdinend Tonnies also advocated the same categorisation of society. Hence pattern variables by guiding social actions along with guiding social orientation help to understand the social system.
