Transforming of farming (Micro-irrigation by PMKSY)
- Reduce the usage of water and fertiliser by ≈ 40% (as per NITI Ayog)
- Prevent over-extraction of ground water (Eg) Agriculture uses 89% of ground water in India → NITI Ayog
- Prevent soil degradation → (due to overuse of fertilizer)
- Increase water productivity (Eg) states like Tamil Nadu have low water productivity
- Better productivity → more income to farmers
- Help reduce farmer suicide (Eg) ≈ 7% of all suicides in India : NCRB
- Promote sustainable agriculture ↓ more optimised use of resources
Under PMKSY these issues can be addressed which can help farming be more economically and environmentally sustainable in future.
