Conditions Required

(A) SALT PANS

  1. High Evaporation (Ex: west India)
  2. Scanty Rainfall (to preserve salinity)
  3. Periodic intrusion of saline ocean water
  4. Aridity and minimal moisture (to help extract salt)

(B) mangroves

(1) marshy land (water logged) (2) Anaerobic respiration to support prop & stilt roots (3) Tropical climate is favorable (to support high Ecosystem productivity)

Role of Ecosystems in coastal Resilience

(1) Biodiversity support Ex: Bengal tiger (sunderbans), wild Ass & kharai camel (salt pans of kutchh)

(2) Disaster cushion Ex: Bhitarkanika mangroves slows down cyclones @ Odisha.

(3) Community support (esp. Tribals) Ex: maldhari community of Gujarat

(4) Economic avenues Ex: Salt, Timber, non timber like Honey, food, etc.

(5) tourism potential and livelihood promotion.

(6) Role of mangroves at Agriculture promotion

(7) Preventing soil Erosion

(8) Aesthetic value

(9) Ecocentric values

Challenges faced by Ecosystems

(1) Illicit and unplanned construction.

(2) Deforestation for agriculture.

(3) violation and poor enforcement of norms due to poor capacity of local bodies.

(4) coastal sand mining, etc.
