Question 31: Geography

Tungurahua Volcano, which was declared a Global Geopark by UNESCO in 2025, is situated in which one among the following countries ?

aEcuador
bPeru
cBolivia
dColombia

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Tungurahua is an active stratovolcano in the Andes of central Ecuador, near the town of Baños, and is locally called the 'Black Giant'. UNESCO recognised the Tungurahua Volcano as a Global Geopark in 2025 for its geological, ecological and cultural value. Peru, Bolivia and Colombia also have Andean volcanoes, but not this one.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: Tungurahua is in central Ecuador.
  • (b) Wrong: Peru has volcanoes such as Misti, but not Tungurahua.
  • (c) Wrong: Bolivia's volcanoes are in the western Altiplano, not here.
  • (d) Wrong: Colombia has its own volcanoes, such as Nevado del Ruiz.

Only the provisional key (27 May 2026) was found; the final key replaces it when found.
