Question 93: International Relations and Current Affairs
Who amongst the following are members of the Jury to select the recipient of ‘Gandhi Peace Prize’?
- IThe President of India
- IIThe Prime Minister of India
- IIIThe Chief Justice of India
- IVThe Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The jury that selects the Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by the Prime Minister and has the Chief Justice of India, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and one eminent person as members. The President of India is not on the jury. So the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice and the Leader of Opposition are the members from the list.
- I. The President is not on the jury.
- II. The Prime Minister heads the jury.
- III. The Chief Justice of India is a member.
- IV. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha is a member.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement I is not correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them includes I.
What you needed to know: The President is not on the jury.
- Then, if you were sure statement III is correct, (a) goes: it leaves III out.
What you needed to know: The Chief Justice of India is a member.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 4.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the Chief Justice of India is also a member.
- (b) Wrong: the President is not on the jury, and the Leader of Opposition is.
- (c) Right: the Prime Minister, Chief Justice and Leader of Opposition are on the jury.
- (d) Wrong: the President is not on the jury, and the Prime Minister is.
