UPSC Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I
Question 80: Geography
Consider the following pairs :
| Region | Country | |
|---|---|---|
| I. | Mallorca | Italy |
| II. | Normandy | Spain |
| III. | Sardinia | France |
In how many of the above rows is the given information correctly matched?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and belongs to Spain, not Italy. Normandy is a region of northern France, not Spain. Sardinia is an Italian island in the Mediterranean, not French. Every row gives the wrong country, so none is correctly matched. Remember: Mallorca is Spanish, Normandy French and Sardinia Italian.
- I. Mallorca is in Spain.
- II. Normandy is in France.
- III. Sardinia is in Italy.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: no row is correct.
- (b) Wrong: no row is correct.
- (c) Wrong: every row is wrong.
- (d) Right: Mallorca is in Spain, Normandy in France and Sardinia in Italy.
