Question 72: History and Culture
The famous female figurine known as ‘Dancing Girl’, found at Mohenjo-daro, is made of
acarnelian
bclay
cbronze
dgold
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro is a small bronze statuette, about 10 cm high, of a slender girl with bangles on one arm, made by the lost-wax (cire perdue) method. It shows the Harappans' skill in metal casting. It is not made of carnelian, which they used for beads, nor of clay, which they used for terracotta figurines, nor of gold. Remember: Dancing Girl in bronze; the bearded Priest-King is in steatite.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: carnelian was used for beads, not for this figurine.
- (b) Wrong: clay was used for terracotta figures, but the Dancing Girl is metal.
- (c) Right: the Dancing Girl is a bronze figure made by the lost-wax method.
- (d) Wrong: it is not made of gold.
