  1. IIndia is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the world.
  2. IIMore than 30 varieties of turmeric are grown in India.
  3. IIIMaharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are major turmeric producing States in India.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

aI and II only
bII and III only
cI and III only
dI, II and III

AnswerThe answer is (d).

India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world, accounting for the bulk of world output. The Spices Board and the Indian Institute of Spices Research list more than 30 varieties grown in the country, such as Alleppey, Salem, Erode and Rajapuri types. The main producing states are Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with Andhra Pradesh and Odisha also important. All three statements are correct.

  • I. India leads the world in turmeric production and export.
  • II. More than 30 varieties are grown in India.
  • III. Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are major producers.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement I is correct, (b) goes: it leaves I out.

What you needed to know: India leads the world in turmeric production and export.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement II is correct, (c) goes: it leaves II out.

What you needed to know: More than 30 varieties are grown in India.

  3. Then, if you were sure statement III is correct, (a) goes: it leaves III out.

What you needed to know: Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are major producers.

Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statement III on the major states is also correct.
  • (b) Wrong: statement I on India's leading position is also correct.
  • (c) Wrong: statement II on the number of varieties is also correct.
  • (d) Right: all three statements are accurate.
