Question 97: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements :

  1. Statement-IRecently, Venezuela has achieved a rapid recovery from its economic crisis and succeeded in preventing its people from fleeing/emigrating to other countries.
  2. Statement-IIVenezuela has the world's largest oil reserves.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements ?

aBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II explains Statement-I
bBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct, but Statement-II does not explain Statement-I
cStatement-I is correct, but Statement-II is incorrect
dStatement-I is incorrect, but Statement-II is correct

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Statement-II is correct: Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves. Statement-I is wrong: Venezuela has not recovered rapidly from its economic crisis, and hyperinflation, shortages and a collapse in output have driven more than seven million people to leave the country, one of the largest displacements in the world. So only Statement-II is correct.

  • I. Venezuela has not recovered rapidly, and millions have emigrated.
  • II. Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves.

How you could have got this

If you were sure Statement-I is not correct, only (d) is left: every other option says it is correct.

What you needed to know: Venezuela has not recovered rapidly, and millions have emigrated.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: Statement-I is incorrect, so Statement-II cannot explain it.
  • (b) Wrong: Statement-I is incorrect.
  • (c) Wrong: it reverses the truth, since Statement-I is the incorrect one.
  • (d) Right: Venezuela has not recovered and emigration continues, but it does hold the largest oil reserves.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
