Question 60: Data Interpretation

A Question is given followed by two Statements I and II. Consider the Question and the Statements.

  1. QuestionWhat is the time required to download the software?
  2. Statement–IThe size of the software is 12 megabytes.
  3. Statement–IIThe transfer rate is 2·4 kilobytes per second.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and the Statements?

aThe Question can be answered by using one of the Statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other Statement alone
bThe Question can be answered by using either Statement alone
cThe Question can be answered by using both the Statements together, but cannot be answered using either Statement alone
dThe Question cannot be answered even by using both the Statements together

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Download time = file size ÷ transfer rate. Statement I gives only the size, and statement II only the rate, so neither alone gives a time. Together the time is 12 MB ÷ 2.4 KB per second; taking 1 MB as about 1000 KB, that is about 5000 seconds. Both statements are needed, since a time needs a size and a rate together.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The size alone or the rate alone gives no time.
  • (b) Wrong. Neither statement suffices on its own.
  • (c) Right. Time = size ÷ rate needs both.
  • (d) Wrong. Together they give the time.
