Question 34: Reading Comprehension

With reference to the above passage, the following assumptions have been made :
- 1.Travel leads to an understanding of humans.
- 2.Travel helps those who wish to learn fundamental common values.
- 3.A person with long experience in travel can resolve differences amongst people.
Which of the assumptions given above are valid?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Assumption 1 is valid: travel shows how common human values appear in different forms, so it deepens understanding of people. Assumption 2 is valid: the passage names learning fundamental common values as travel's greatest gain for those who want to live at ease among others. Assumption 3 is not: long experience helps one judge what is local and what is universal, but nothing says such a person can resolve differences between people.
- 1. Meeting people abroad shows how shared values take different forms, which builds understanding of humans.
- 2. Learning common fundamental values is named as travel's chief gain for such people.
- 3. Experience helps tell local from universal; the passage never claims it settles disputes.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: Experience helps tell local from universal; the passage never claims it settles disputes.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right. Assumptions 1 and 2 are supported.
- (b) Wrong. It includes assumption 3, which the passage does not support.
- (c) Wrong. It includes assumption 3 and leaves out assumption 2, which the passage states.
- (d) Wrong. Assumption 3 is not supported.
