Question 33: Reading Comprehension

Passage—2 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Only with long experience and opening…”

When we meet other people while we travel, we learn to differentiate between

aimagination and understanding
bcommunities and nationalities
clocal values and universal values
dfriends and foes

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The passage says a traveller who deals with people in many places comes to tell apart what is merely local or parochial from what is universal in his choices, and that values such as justice, love and honour are valid everywhere though handled differently. So meeting others teaches us to tell local values from universal values: option (c). Imagination, nationalities and friend or foe are not what it contrasts.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The passage does not contrast imagination with understanding.
  • (b) Wrong. Communities and nationalities are not the contrast drawn.
  • (c) Right. The passage contrasts what is parochial with what is universal.
  • (d) Wrong. Friends and foes are not discussed.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
