Question 9: Geography

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.Amarkantak Hills are at the confluence of Vindhya and Sahyadri Ranges.
  2. 2.Biligirirangan Hills constitute the easternmost part of Satpura Range.
  3. 3.Seshachalam Hills constitute the southernmost part of Western Ghats.

How many of the statements given above are correct?

aOnly one
bOnly two
cAll three
dNone

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

All three statements are wrong. Amarkantak is where the Vindhya and Satpura ranges meet, not the Sahyadri. The Biligirirangan Hills sit at the meeting of the Western and Eastern Ghats on the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu border, and the Satpura's eastern end is the Maikal range near Amarkantak. The Seshachalam Hills belong to the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh, not the Western Ghats. Link each range to its parent system.

  • 1. Amarkantak is at the Vindhya-Satpura junction.
  • 2. Biligirirangan Hills join the Western and Eastern Ghats; they are not the Satpura's end.
  • 3. Seshachalam Hills are part of the Eastern Ghats.

How you could have got this

No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Only one would need one statement to be right; each misplaces a range.
  • (b) Two would need two statements to be right; none is.
  • (c) All three are wrong, so they cannot all be correct.
  • (d) Correct: each statement misplaces a hill range.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
