UPSC Prelims 2023 · GS Paper I
Question 10: International Relations and Current Affairs
With reference to India's projects on connectivity, consider the following statements :
- 1.East-West Corridor under Golden Quadrilateral Project connects Dibrugarh and Surat.
- 2.Trilateral Highway connects Moreh in Manipur and Chiang Mai in Thailand via Myanmar.
- 3.Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor connects Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with Kunming in China.
How many of the above statements are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
None of the three is right. The East-West Corridor of the national highway programme runs from Silchar in Assam to Porbandar in Gujarat, and it is separate from the Golden Quadrilateral (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata). The India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway runs from Moreh in Manipur to Mae Sot in Thailand through Myanmar. The BCIM Economic Corridor links Kolkata with Kunming, not Varanasi.
- 1. The East-West Corridor runs from Silchar to Porbandar and is not part of the Golden Quadrilateral.
- 2. The Trilateral Highway ends at Mae Sot in Thailand, not Chiang Mai.
- 3. The BCIM corridor connects Kolkata with Kunming.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Only one would need a correct statement; each has a wrong endpoint.
- (b) Two would need two correct statements; none is.
- (c) All three have wrong endpoints.
- (d) Correct: every statement gives a wrong terminus or wrong programme.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
