Question 50: Environment and Ecology
The “Miyawaki method” is well known for the :
aPromotion of commercial farming in arid and semi-arid areas
bDevelopment of gardens using genetically modified flora
cCreation of mini forests in urban areas
dHarvesting wind energy on coastal areas and on sea surfaces
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The Miyawaki method, devised by the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, plants many native tree species very densely, in layers, on a small plot after preparing the soil. The result is a fast-growing mini forest, often in urban areas, that becomes self-sustaining within a few years. It is not about commercial farming, genetically modified gardens or wind energy.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) It is a forest-restoration method, not commercial farming in dry areas.
- (b) It uses native species, not genetically modified flora.
- (c) Correct. Dense native mini forests in urban spaces.
- (d) It has nothing to do with wind energy.
