Question 49: Environment and Ecology
“Biorock technology” is talked about in which one of the following situations ?
aRestoration of damaged coral reefs
bDevelopment of building materials using plant residues
cIdentification of areas for exploration/extraction of shale gas
dProviding salt licks for wild animals in forests/protected areas
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Biorock, or mineral accretion technology, passes a low-voltage electric current through seawater using a steel structure. Dissolved minerals deposit on the structure as limestone, and corals attached to it grow faster and resist stress such as warming. It is used to restore damaged coral reefs and has nothing to do with building materials, shale gas or salt licks.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct. Biorock helps restore damaged coral reefs.
- (b) Building materials from plant residues is a different technology.
- (c) Shale gas exploration uses geological methods, not Biorock.
- (d) Salt licks for animals are unrelated to Biorock.
