Question 24: Geography
Gandikota canyon of South India was created by which one of the following rivers ?
aCauvery
bManjira
cPennar
dTungabhadra
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Gandikota, in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, is a gorge cut by the Pennar river through the Erramala hills, which is why it is called the Grand Canyon of India. The Cauvery, Manjira and Tungabhadra flow elsewhere and did not carve this gorge. Link the Pennar with Rayalaseema.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Cauvery flows through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, not through Gandikota.
- (b) The Manjira is a Godavari tributary in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.
- (c) Correct. The Pennar cuts the Gandikota gorge.
- (d) The Tungabhadra, a Krishna tributary, does not flow through Gandikota.
