Question 23: Geography

Which one of the following lakes of West Africa has become dry and turned into a desert ?

aLake Victoria
bLake Faguibine
cLake Oguta
dLake Volta

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Lake Faguibine in northern Mali once held water fed by the Niger's floods, but repeated droughts and reduced inflow from the 1970s left it dry, and the basin is turning into desert. Lake Victoria lies in East Africa, Lake Volta in Ghana is a large reservoir, and Lake Oguta in Nigeria is a small lake that still holds water.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Lake Victoria is in East Africa and holds abundant water.
  • (b) Correct. Lake Faguibine in Mali has dried up and turned to desert.
  • (c) Lake Oguta in Nigeria is a small lake that still exists.
  • (d) Lake Volta in Ghana is a large reservoir created by the Akosombo dam.
