Question 70: Data Interpretation

A pie chart gives the expenditure on five different items A, B, C, D and E in a household. If B, C, D and E correspond to 90°, 50°, 45° and 75° respectively, then what is the percentage of expenditure on item A?

a112/9
b125/6
c155/9
d250/9

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

A pie chart is 360° in all. B + C + D + E = 90 + 50 + 45 + 75 = 260°, so A = 360 − 260 = 100°. Its share is 100/360 of the total, which is 5/18, and 5/18 × 100 = 250/9 %, about 27.8%. Check: the other items are 25%, 13.9%, 12.5% and 20.8%, and with A these add up to 100%.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) 112/9 is about 12.4%, too low.
  • (b) 125/6 is about 20.8%, too low.
  • (c) 155/9 is about 17.2%, too low.
  • (d) Correct: 100/360 × 100 = 250/9 %.
