Question 63: Reading Comprehension

With reference to the above passage, which of the following statements is/are correct?
- 1.Conventions are the sources of rights of man.
- 2.Rights of man can be exercised only when there is a social order.
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The quoted line treats social order as a hallowed right on which all other rights depend, yet one created by human agreement rather than by nature. Statement 1 follows: other rights rest on social order and social order rests on conventions, so conventions are the ultimate source. Statement 2 follows too: because social order is the basis of all rights, rights can be exercised only where there is a social order.
- 1. Social order underpins other rights and is itself founded on conventions.
- 2. Social order is the basis of all rights, so they need it.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Social order underpins other rights and is itself founded on conventions.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Social order is the basis of all rights, so they need it.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 2 also follows.
- (b) Wrong: statement 1 also follows.
- (c) Correct: both follow.
- (d) Wrong: both follow.
