Question 50: Data Interpretation

Six lectures A, B, C, D, E and F, each of one hour duration, are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Consider the Question and two Statements given below :

  1. QuestionWhich lecture is in the third period?
  2. Statement–1Lecture F is preceded by A and followed by C.
  3. Statement–2There is no lecture after lecture B.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the Question and the Statements?

aStatement–1 alone is sufficient to answer the Question
bStatement–2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question
cBoth Statement–1 and Statement–2 are sufficient to answer the Question
dBoth Statement–1 and Statement–2 are not sufficient to answer the Question

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Six lectures fill six periods. Statement 1 makes A, F, C a consecutive block in that order. Statement 2 puts B last, in the sixth period. Together, the block of three can sit in periods 1 to 3, 2 to 4 or 3 to 5, with D and E filling the rest. The third period could then be C, F or A, so it is not fixed.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Fails: the block A, F, C can sit in several places.
  • (b) Fails: B being last says nothing about the third period.
  • (c) Fails: the block can occupy three different places.
  • (d) Correct: the third period could be C, F or A.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
