Question 99: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements in respect of the 32nd Summer Olympics :

  1. 1.The official motto for this Olympics is ‘A New World’.
  2. 2.Sport Climbing, Surfing, Skateboarding, Karate and Baseball are included in this Olympics.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The 32nd Summer Olympics, Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021), had the motto United by Emotion, not A New World, so statement 1 is wrong. Five sports were added for this edition: sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding and karate, along with the return of baseball and softball, so statement 2 is correct. Remember: Tokyo 2020 motto is United by Emotion.

  • 1. The motto of Tokyo 2020 was United by Emotion.
  • 2. Sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding, karate and baseball were included.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The motto of Tokyo 2020 was United by Emotion.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding, karate and baseball were included.

Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statement 1 names a wrong motto.
  • (b) Right: only statement 2 is correct.
  • (c) Wrong: statement 1 is false.
  • (d) Wrong: statement 2 is correct.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
