Question 98: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements in respect of the Laureus World Sports Award which was instituted in the year 2000 :

  1. 1.American golfer Tiger Woods was the first winner of this award.
  2. 2.The award was received mostly by ‘Formula One’ players so far.
  3. 3.Roger Federer received this award maximum number of times compared to others.

Which of the above statements are correct?

a1 and 2 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The Laureus World Sports Awards began in 2000, and golfer Tiger Woods was the first Sportsman of the Year, so statement 1 is correct. Winners come from many sports, including golf, tennis, athletics and football, and Formula One drivers are only some of them, so statement 2 is wrong. Roger Federer had won the award more often than any other player, as of 2021, so statement 3 is correct.

  • 1. Tiger Woods won the first Sportsman of the Year award in 2000.
  • 2. Winners come from many sports; Formula One drivers are not the majority.
  • 3. As of 2021, Roger Federer had won it more often than anyone else.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Winners come from many sports; Formula One drivers are not the majority.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statement 2 is false.
  • (b) Wrong: statement 2 is false, and it omits statement 1.
  • (c) Right: statements 1 and 3 are correct.
  • (d) Wrong: statement 2 is false.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
