Question 75: Science and Technology

‘Triclosan’, considered harmful when exposed to high levels for a long time, is most likely present in which of the following?

aFood preservatives
bFruit-ripening substances
cReused plastic containers
dToiletries

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent added to toiletries and personal-care products such as soaps, hand washes, toothpastes, deodorants and some cosmetics. Long exposure to high levels has raised concern as an endocrine disruptor and for promoting microbial resistance. It is not a food preservative, a fruit-ripening agent or a feature of reused plastic containers.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: food preservatives are substances like benzoates and sorbates.
  • (b) Wrong: fruit ripening agents include calcium carbide and ethylene.
  • (c) Wrong: concern over reused plastic containers is about chemicals like BPA and phthalates.
  • (d) Right: triclosan is found in soaps, toothpaste and other toiletries.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
