Question 74: Science and Technology

Bisphenol A (BPA), a cause of concern, is a structural/key component in the manufacture of which of the following kinds of plastics?

aLow-density polyethylene
bPolycarbonate
cPolyethylene terephthalate
dPolyvinyl chloride

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Bisphenol A is a building block of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It can leach from polycarbonate containers, such as some bottles and food containers, particularly when heated, and is an endocrine disruptor, which is why it is a health concern. Low-density polyethylene, PET and PVC are made from other monomers and are not defined by BPA. Remember: BPA means polycarbonate.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: LDPE is made from ethylene.
  • (b) Right: BPA is a key component of polycarbonate.
  • (c) Wrong: PET is made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
  • (d) Wrong: PVC is made from vinyl chloride.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
